Travel And Experience by Edith E. Jafry

“It’s tomorrow morning.” That was all that I could whisper in my heart. Our field trip to Penang. My feeling was mixed with excitement and worries. I couldn’t think straight. It took me a while to realize that time was running so fast than I could imagine. I could barely see my hair grew longer. I couldn’t even count the days and nights that I’ve spent in my whole university life. Sigh. That’s all that I could do.

It was already six and a half in the evening. Nevertheless, I have not packed my things yet. My body was weak and dispirited. I was really worried because I couldn’t call my mother that I will be going for my trip since I’ve lost my phone. But I know that this trip is very important for me. My future depends on this. I had to concentrate on this. So I did. After a few moments I was trapped in my mind, I started to pack my things in my bag. I packed everything that I wanted to bring.
Before the sun could show its bright shiny face, my friend already woke me up. It was still dawn. I woke up earlier than the other days that have passed by. I checked everything. I made sure that there’s nothing that I forgot to bring along. Since it was so early, I couldn’t hear any sound of peoples’ movements or any sounds of bird chirping. It was very quiet and yet very peaceful. The surrounding was not the same as my home town in the early in the morning. As early as six in the morning, the people in my home town would already be up and be ready to go to work. The flashback began to appear suddenly. But it’s really different in the college. Students probably still fast asleep and will wake up at noon when the sun is already above the roof. I wondered how it will be like in Penang.

Our flight to Penang was at nine o’clock. It really made me feel uneasy and I started to look around to look for things that could make me calm. At the same time, I felt so excited. I was really curious about the things that I will see and what I will experience when I arrive at Penang. Sigh. That feeling when you don’t know what it is that made you feel like that.

Our flight to Penang took at least one hour and a half to reach the destination. I opened my eyes widely to see how Penang looked like. I couldn’t see any significant differences between Kuching and Penang, except that the people in Penang consist of a multi-racial society, Indians, Chinese, Malays and other races. They mingle around regardless their skin colour, their religions, or even their races. I really envied them. Wouldn’t it be nice if all the inhabitants of this earth could also do the same?

We went to a lot of tourist attractions in Penang. Some of the places that are still stuck in my mind are the Penang Hill and the Kek Lok Si Temple. These two places had attracted me a lot.  I really enjoyed them. Even though it was only for a few days, I really had a great time. I learned more about how other people in other places lived. I guess it is serendipity. I never expected to gain more experience and knowledge when I travel to other places.

“The more you travel, the more experiences you will have.” This has become my words of encouragement. Nothing can stop me from learning the things that I want to learn and experience.
