It was my exciting day for me because my friend bring me to his relatives wedding ceremony. In the land of Hornbill, they mentioned the wedding ceremony or other ceremony as ‘Pengilan’.
On the occasion of our arrival, I saw a lot of people attend the ‘Pengilan’. One man in the age around 40’s came and asked us sit on guest table. On the table, I saw dishes that been served by the villages that during pengilan.
Before I touched the dishes, I heard a noisy sound but the rhythm sounds constantly. I was wondering where the sounds came from, so I looking for it. Suddenly, a group of people hit the rounded thing which they called it Kompang. A group of people who play a Kompang they call it ‘Hadrah’. Before the bride arrive to the ‘pelamin’ there are performance of silat. I was surprised because the performance looks real till make me want to call a cop, but my friend told that only a performance.
The bride proceed to the pelamin after the silat is done. I continue my meal while watching ‘tepung tawar’ session by the bride relative. I’m finish my meal. It is very delicious, and wonder what type of food is that. I ask my friend and he said it is ‘Nasi Minyak’. The other dishes are Daging Kicap, Sayur Rebung, Acar and Keceri Nanas. I learn a new culture also where there eat using bare hand only and they provide a pot fill with a clean water to wash our hand.
Before we left, we were given a sweet in mini box as a gift. It make me so happy. That was my new experience attend a wedding ceremony in Sarawak-Malay way.
